**Updated 8/26/10** ***TRACK IS CURRENTLY CLOSED*** On 8/25 we attended a meeting with the Lake Park Head Ranger and other County Officials. The meeting was called to determine if and when the back of the park could once again be opened to vehicular traffic so we could gain access to our track. To preface the findings you should know that only once before in the history of this Park being operated by Parks and Recreation has the water levels been higher. Here are the findings of the park tour: The main road from the first playground to the stop sign by the track is completely under water. There are places where the lakes on each side of the road have merged creating an impassable road with up to 3 feet of water The dirt road from Whirley road at the rear of the park is holding smaller amounts of water. Unfortunately, the road is saturated and vehicles are unable to drive through without sinking 3-6 inches into the mud The access road to the archery area the road is mud and the lakes on both sides are inches from flooding across the road - The track is draining fairly well now with the recent work done by our track crew. Most of the track surface has degraded to the extent of needing major work to get it rideable again. We will need a few full days with many volunteers and dry weather to get everything back to normal
- The grass area in front of the track (our parking area) is holding 1-2 inches of water

- While we expressed the need to do everything we can to reopen, the Parks Department has made the following determinations and statements:
- 1/3 to 1/2 of Lake Park is currently under water
- The BMX Track, RC Track and the Horse Arena’s are closed to vehicular traffic
- All horse trails are closed to equine activity
- Natural animal predators (snakes, alligators) are now found outside of designated areas as the topography has completely changed
- The Whirley Road gate is closed indefinitely
- The Archery Road bypass to the rear of the park is closed indefinitely
- Lake levels are rising, not receeding
- Due to safety concerns the track will be unable to open for practice, racing or any other type of event through the end of September
- A limited number of volunteers will be permitted to work on the track with prior approval
- Tampa BMX Raceway will meet with County officials weekly to determine if the above constraints can be lifted early if the weather improves. We know that’s not the type of information everyone is hoping for but this turn of events is out of our hands. If we see drier weather over the next few weeks we see no reason why we could not amend these constraints. We will continue to do everything in our power to get the track re-opened as soon as possible. Please have patience, participate in work parties as they are announced, and frequent our sister tracks to keep your edge! I
- If you want to know when we will be open for practice, racing or track work you must get on our email list. Addresses are never shared. Click "Contact US" and send your information
